Curcumin was first isolated from turmeric in 1815, and the structure was delineated in 1910 as diferuloylmethane. Curcumin has an absorption maximum around 420 nm.
Some benefits of curcumin, such as the potential protection from colon cancer, may not require systemic absorption. In 2007, a polymeric nanoparticle encapsulated formulation of curcumin ("nanocurcumin") has been synthesized which has the potential to bypass many of the shortcomings associated with free curcumin, such as poor solubility and poor systemic bioavailability. Nanocurcumin particles have a size of less than 100 nanometers on average, and demonstrate comparable to superior efficacy compared to free curcumin in human cancer cell line models. However, actual in vivo absorption has not been demonstrated with this nanoparticle.
The principal turmeric component curcumin has been shown to be as effective as cortisone and phenylbutazone in decreasing inflammation. It contains pain relievers that stop the neurotransmitter substance P from sending its pain signals to the brain. It also works in several ways to decrease inflammation by reducing prostaglandin activity. Researchers also believe that curcumin increases cortisone's anti-inflammatory action by making the body more sensitive to this hormone. Turmeric is a safe and effective pain killer, so reach for it instead of aspirin or other pain killers (but remember to look for the source of your pain as well)! Curcumin reportedly has a similar action to that of aspirin and aspirin-like anti-inflammatory agents. However, an advantage of curcumin over aspirin is claimed, since curcumin, unlike aspirin, is reported to selectively inhibit synthesis of inflammatory prostaglandins but does not affect the synthesis of prostacyclin. Curcumin may be preferable for individuals who are prone to vascular thrombosis and require anti-inflammatory and/or anti-arthritic therapy.
So the next time you sit down to a curry dinner, consider that you are doing far more for your body than simply giving it a flavorful meal. † PS 16.12.2008: Wie sich durch einen Brief erst etliche Monate nach ihrem Tod herausstellte, verhielt sich meine Mutter mir gegenüber jahrzehntelang verlogen und extrem ungerecht - im krassen Gegensatz zu ihrem Verhalten ihrer Lieblingstochter IRMHILD gegenüber. Unter dem massiven Druck meiner Schwester IRMHILD und zu deren Vorteil verweigerte mir meine Mutter jahrzehntelang jeglichen Einblick in ihre Verhältnisse.
Es erweist sich nun nochmals als vollkommen gerechtfertigt, daß ich nicht auf ihre Beerdigung gegangen bin! Das Grab meiner Eltern werde ich niemals aufsuchen!

2 meiner 4 Geschwister wären theoretisch von ihren kognitiven Fähigkeiten her in der Lage, diese Blognotiz zur Kenntnis zu nehmen. Sie werden es vermutlich nie tun. Ihre grenzenlose Gleichgültigkeit & Ignoranz mir gegenüber könnten mich davor zeitlebens bewahren!

Mein Kommentar zu diesem SPIEGEL-Artikel 04.04.2005: DER SPIEGEL hat nun wirklich keine Zivilcourage. Ins scheinheilige Gewand der Distanzierung kleidet er die mehr als berechtigte Kirchenkritik DREWERMANNs. Viel drastischere Formulierungen sind jetzt überfällig angesichts der seit Jahrhunderten unverändert extrem frauenfeindlichen Politik der Katholischen Kirche. Frauen dürfen nach wie vor die hochdotierten Posten weder als Priester noch als Bischöfe noch als Kardinäle einnehmen. Diese bleiben nach wie vor der erlauchten Männlichkeit vorbehalten. Völlig unverständlich, daß angesichts dieser noch immerwährenden mittelalterlichen, anti-emanzipatorischen, chauvinistischen Zustände innerhalb der Katholischen Kirche die katholischen Frauen nicht mit einer massiven Kirchenaustrittswelle reagieren, um endlich die maßlos arroganten Kirchenfürsten von ihrem Thron zu jagen.

Lactobacillus acidophilus wird bei Störungen der Vaginalflora eingesetzt.

Eine gesunde Vaginalflora kann sich nur im leicht sauren Milieu entwicklen. Durch viele unterschiedliche Gründe kann der ph-Wert des Scheidenmilieus aus dem Gleichgewicht geraten und sich ins basische verschieben.

Das kann eine allgemeine Schwäche des Immunsystems durch Krankheiten oder Streß sein oder die Folge einer Antibiotikatherapie, aber auch zu intensive Hygienemaßnahmen oder häufiger Partnerwechsel.

Lactobacillus acidophilus ist ein Milchsäurebakterium. Es säuert das Scheidenmilieu an und sorgt so dafür, daß das physiologische Gleichgewicht wieder hergestellt wird.
Beschwerden wie Trockenheit oder Juckreiz werden so gelindert.

Ähnlich wie im Darm bilden auch die Milchsäurebakterien Lactobacillus acidophilus einen hoch effizienten Abwehrfilm. Sogar gegenüber dem extrem aggressiven Staphylococcus aureus, einem sehr gefürchteten, gegen die meisten Antibiotica resistenten Keim, scheinen die Milchsäurebakterien Lactobacillus acidophilus (erhältlich als Döderlein-Stäbchen) Abwehrstoffe auszuschwitzen (Milchsäure)!!!

Albert Doederlein wurde am 5. Juli 1860 in Augsburg geboren.

Er studierte Medizin in Erlangen und promovierte 1884.

1887 wechselte er mit seinem damaligen Chef Paul Zweifel nach Leipzig, wo er seine bakteriologischen Forschungen vorantrieb und habilitierte.
Als Namensgeber des Lactobacillus acidophilus vaginalis Doederlein, auch Doederlein-Stäbchen wurde der Name Doederlein in der Medizin unsterblich. Dabei war er nicht der erste, der diese Bakterien sah, allerdings erkannte er als Erster den Einfluß auf das sauere Mileu der Scheide und die relative Keimfreiheit derselben.
1894 wurde er nach Groningen berufen, 1897 nach Tübingen und 1907 nach München.
1934 emeritierte er mit 74 Jahren, am 10. Dezember 1941 starb Albert Doederlein in München.

The Natural Treatment of Vaginal Infections

It may come as a surprise to you, but vaginitis is one of the most common problems in clinical medicine today. An inflammation of the mucous membranes lining the vagina, vaginitis is characterized by vaginal irritation, an itchy burning sensation and abnormal vaginal discharge. According to a study conducted by Healthy Woman Magazine, 1,427,000 Canadian women treated themselves for one or more vaginal infections in 2000. Many women are plagued with recurrent vaginal infections for no apparent reason

Did you know that there are different types of vaginal infections? While most vaginitis sufferers lump all vaginal irritations into the yeast infection category, there are actually three different types of vaginitis: bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis and trichomoniasis. Candidiasis and bacterial vaginosis are both caused by disturbances in the naturally occurring vaginal flora. Candidiasis, commonly called a yeast infection, is the result of an overgrowth of candida albicans; whereas, bacterial vaginosis is due to a change in the natural balance among the different types of bacteria in the vagina. Characterized by painful urination, trichomoniasis is an infection of the uro-genital tract and is caused by a single celled protozoan, called trichomoniasis. Trichomoniasis is a common STD referred to by some as “trich”.

It all comes down to maintaining a healthy balance. With the exception of trichomoniasis, the root cause of most vaginal infections is an imbalance in the vaginal flora. It’s your body’s way of protecting itself from harmful bacteria. The Lactobacilli biofilm is the body’s own natural protection against vaginitis. By acidifying the vaginal area, producing anti-microbial hydrogen peroxide, competing for food with pathogenic microorganisms and adhering to epithelial cells of the vaginal mucosa leaving no space for invading pathogens, the naturally occurring Lactobacillus bacteria prevent invading microorganisms from taking hold. Under such acidic conditions, bacterial pathogens cannot grow and even those present are kept to asymptomatic levels. Thriving on glycogen stores produced by the vaginal mucosa after puberty, the Lactobacillus bacteria growth is directly affected by estrogen levels.

Sometimes it doesn’t have anything to do with your health habits. Did you know that low or high estrogen levels are contributing factors to vaginitis? Low estrogen levels significantly reduce the available glycogen-inhibiting Lactobacillus growth. Associated with menopause and natural hormone level changes prior to and following each menstrual cycle, low estrogen levels increase the risk of bacterial vaginosis infection. High estrogen levels, while important to control the pathogenic bacteria growth, may favour an overgrowth of Candida leading to a yeast infection, since Candida also grows on glycogen. Oral contraceptives with high estrogen levels or the use of antibiotics that destroy healthy vaginal flora both contribute to candidiasis.

Before running out to the pharmacy consider a healthy alternative. Today, women have access to many treatment options for vaginitis, including both pharmaceutical and over-the-counter probiotic vaginal suppositories. It is critical for a patient presenting a first time infection to confirm with an appropriate practitioner the type of infection prior to seeking alternative treatments. A standard treatment for vaginal infections in Europe for many years, there is currently only one probiotic approved for use in the treatment of bacterial vaginosis in Canada. Januar 2005, Rezensentin/Rezensent: bldpf (Mehr über mich) aus ERLANGEN Reiner Grißhammer Der glykämische Index (GI) beschreibt die Wirkung eines kohlenhydrathaltigen Lebensmittels auf den BlutGlucoseSpiegel. Er zeigt, wie schnell die aufgenommenen Kohlenhydrate in Glucose umgewandelt werden. Der GI wird beeinflußt von der Zusammensetzung des Lebensmittels, der Art der Zubereitung, der Anwesenheit von Enzyminhibitoren (extrem stark vorhanden z.B. in Kidney-Bohnen) und der Zusammensetzung der Mahlzeit. Der Konsum eines Lebensmittels mit einem niedrigen GI ist bei sehr vielen Menschen mit einem nachhaltigeren Sättigungsgrad verbunden. Zur Vorsicht bei Lebensmitteln mit hohem glykämischen Index kann allen Übergewichtigen und Abmagerungswilligen nur geraten werden! Sie ist deshalb ein äußerst bedeutsamer Parameter für die Abschätzung des durch eine Mahlzeit ausgelösten Insulinbedarfs. Eine ernährungsphysiologisch relevante Tatsache ersten Ranges also, die jahrzehntelang von der sog. Schulmedizin weltweit sträflich mißachtet wurde - mit entsprechend katastrophalen Folgen für den bedrohlich zunehmenden Personenkreis der zuckerstoffwechsellabilen Menschen.
Der Kontext zwischen glykämischem Index bzw. glykämischer Last und ernährungsabhängigen Erkrankungen ist endlich Thema zahlreicher Untersuchungen, die belegen, daß eine langjährige Ernährung mit einem hohen glykämischen Index und einer hohen glykämischen Last die Entstehung von Übergewicht und Diabetes mellitus Typ II eindeutig fördert.Diäten mit niedriger glykämischer Last führen zu signifikant niedrigeren LDL- und Gesamt-Cholesterinspiegeln und zu signifikant niedrigeren Triglycerid-Spiegeln - im Vergleich zu einer Ernährung mit hoher glykämischer Last! Unbelievable but true: the CEOs (chief executive officers) and the flop bank bosses are still living on the fat of the land! There will be no letup in Wall Street bankers’ ruthless pursuit of profits and personal wealth. The arrogance of the bankers is still extremely brazen: On 13.10.2008 the American Bankers Association demanded that government regulators scrap accounting rules that require banks and financial firms to write down the value of worthless assets on their balance sheets.

Flashback in the year of 1929: The Great Depression was a worldwide economic downturn starting in most places in 1929 and ending at different times in the 1930s or early 1940s for different countries. It was the largest and most important economic depression in modern history, and is used in the 21st century as a benchmark on how far the world's economy can fall. The Great Depression originated in the United States; historians most often use as a starting date the stock market crash on October 29, 1929, known as Black Tuesday. The end of the depression in the U.S. is associated with the onset of the war economy of World War II, beginning around 1939.

Recent incidents of bank runs and bankruptcy:
On 13 September 2007, the British bank Northern Rock arranged an emergency loan facility from the Bank of England, which it claimed was the result of short-term liquidity problems. The bank's defenders claimed its cash shortage was the result of over-exposure to the failing US sub-prime mortgage market, while its critics argued that it was the result of Northern Rock's own careless lending practices. A run began the following day, Friday, with reports of its internet banking site being overloaded, and long queues outside branches that day, Saturday morning and the following Monday. News reports on 17 September stated that an estimated £2 billion GBP of retail deposits had been withdrawn by customers since the bank had applied for emergency funds.
On Tuesday, 11 March 2008, a bank run began on the securities and banking firm Bear Stearns. While Bear Stearns was not an ordinary deposit-taking bank, it had financed huge long-term investments by selling short-maturity bonds (Asset Backed Commercial Paper), making it vulnerable to panic on the part of its bondholders. Credit officers of rival firms began to say that Bear Stearns would not be able to make good on its obligations. Within two days, Bear Stearns's capital base of $17 billion had dwindled to $2 billion in cash, and Bear Stearns told government officials that it saw little option other than to file for bankruptcy the next day. By 07:00 Friday, the Federal Reserve decided to lend Bear Stearns money, the first time since the Great Depression that it had lent to a nonbank. Stocks sank, and that day JPMorgan Chase began an effort to buy Bear Stearns as part of a government-sponsored bailout. The deal was arranged by Sunday in an effort to calm markets before overseas markets opened.
On 11 July 2008, U.S. mortgage lender IndyMac Bank was seized by federal regulators. IndyMac had been a stressed institution for months. The bank was capital-constrained and possibly heading for regulatory intervention. However, both regulators and the bank itself blamed its troubles on a letter from Sen. Charles E. Schumer questioning its viability. Following the public release of the letter on June 26, IndyMac customers withdrew amounts averaging $100 million a day from the bank, or a total of $1.3 billion in cash. The run caused a liquidity crisis which forced IndyMac to announce it was halting new loan submissions, closing its retail and wholesale lending divisions, and laying off 3,800 employees.
On 25 September 2008, the Office of Thrift Supervision was forced to shut down Washington Mutual, the largest savings and loan in the United States and the sixth-largest overall financial institution, on a Thursday due to a massive run. Over the previous 10 days, customers had withdrawn $16.7 billion in deposits. This is currently the biggest bank failure in American financial history. Normally, banks are seized on Fridays to allow the FDIC the weekend to prepare the failed bank for takeover by another bank. However, WaMu's size led regulators to shut it down on a Thursday.

The German government said on Sunday that it would guarantee all private savings accounts in the country in an effort to reinforce increasingly shaky confidence in the financial system. The announcement came as the leaders of largest European economies met over the weekend searching for a systemwide answer to a credit crisis that has required them to rescue several banks in just the past week. Germany’s guarantee of its private savings — worth about 568 billion EURO, or much more than $700 billion - followed the news that a group of banks had pulled out of a deal to provide 35 billion EURO, or $48.2 billion, to rescue the large German mortgage lender, Hypo Real Estate.

Volksverarschung total: Ohne Volksabstimmung wird die gesamte Banken-Branche seit nunmehr Herbst 2008 mit Milliardensummen aus Steuertöpfen, also vom Steuerzahler alimentiert! Die absolut verantwortungslosen Milliarden EURO verzockenden Bank-Manager kassieren nach wie vor Millionen-Entgelte und leben weiterhin ganz ungeniert in Saus und Braus - ungeachtet der prekären Finanzlage großer Bevölkerungsteile, denen die bitteren Folgen der in Gang gesetzten Rezession aufgebürdet werden. Schon sinken die Einzelhandelsumsätze (15.10.2008) in den USA drastisch in nahezu sämtlichen Sektoren. Mit kurzer Verzögerung wird sich das gleiche Drama demnächst in Europa und Deutschland ereignen. Der arme, geschundene Teil der Zwei-Drittel-Gesellschaft hat also die volle Last der Rezession auszubaden, die durch die zockenden Banken und der sie jahrzehntelang deckenden Politiker systematisch herbeigeführt wurde!

Der plötzliche Abgang von Lehman Brothers und Merrill Lynch hat der Wirtschaft riesige Mengen Liquidität entzogen, weil Papierwerte, die in Jahrzehnte langer Spekulation aufgeblasen wurden, wie ein Luftballon zerplatzten. Das ist Kapital, das gebraucht würde, um Geschäftstätigkeit zu finanzieren. Seine Vernichtung wird notwendigerweise das Wirtschaftshandeln behindern, Arbeitslosigkeit und Rezession anheizen. Das wird Immobilienpreise und Konsumausgaben weiter drücken und die Bilanzen schon finanziell geschwächter Banken weiter erschüttern.

In den USA und der Weltwirtschaft zeichnet sich eine Gezeitenwende ab, die zu einer Katastrophe von Ausmaßen führen kann, wie nicht mehr seit der Großen Depression der 1930er Jahre.

Der Fall solcher Ikonen des amerikanischen Kapitalismus wie der 158 Jahre alten Lehman Brothers oder der 94 Jahre alten Merrill Lynch kann die Ideologie der herrschenden Elite der USA vom "freien Markt" nur weiter diskreditieren und ihr politisches und ökonomisches System in Verruf bringen. Das Spektakel, Giganten des Kapitalismus in Schulden ertrinken zu sehen, die in Jahrzehnten verantwortungsloser Spekulation angehäuft wurden, muß zwangsläufig auch diejenige Oberschicht samt Regierungssystem diskreditieren, die für dieses Debakel verantwortlich ist.

Rückblende ins Jahr 1929: Für ihre "schwarzen" Tage und ihren Schwarzen Freitag vom 25. Oktober ist heute noch besonders der Zusammenbruch der amerikanischen Börse 1929 bekannt, der die Weltwirtschaftskrise auslöste. Im Unterschied zu dem vorhergehenden und nachfolgenden Tagen war der 25. Oktober 1929 allerdings kein Tag besonderer Kursverluste: Am Mittwoch, dem 23. Oktober, war der Dow Jones Industrial Average von 326,51 vom Vortag auf 305,85 gefallen, und am "Black Thursday", dem 24. Oktober 1929, nochmals um 6,38 Punkte auf 299,47, während er am Freitag vielmehr wieder um 1,75 Punkte zulegte und seine größten Verluste dann am Montag erlitt, an dem er wieder von 298,97 auf 260,64 fiel. Am "Black Tuesday" oder "Tragic Tuesday" fiel er dann weiter auf 230,07.
29. Oktober 1929 (schwarzer Dienstag): In den ersten sechs Börsenminuten fielen manche Werte um einen Dollar pro zehn Sekunden. Bis zum Mittag waren über 8350000 Aktien abgestoßen worden. Viele Aktien waren in den Tagen zuvor bereits um mehr als 30% gefallen. Erst jetzt begannen einige, die Realität zu sehen, nämlich das das hohe Kursniveau ein Traumgebilde und eine Utopie waren. Die Banken forderten die Kredite zurück, es kam zu Zwangsverkäufen, die den Abwärtstrend noch mehr beschleunigten. Die Börse erstickte fast in einer Flut von Verkaufsaufträgen. Das Kartenhaus brach entgültig zusammen.

Als Bankenkrise wird eine Finanzkrise bezeichnet, in der das Vertrauen in das Bankensystem durch finanzielle Probleme einzelner Kreditinstitute so schwer beschädigt wird, daß eine Kettenreaktion droht.
Durch diese Kettenreaktion werden auch andere Banken, deren Gläubiger und in der Folge die gesamte Volkswirtschaft geschädigt.
Das bisher folgenschwerste Beispiel solcher Vorgänge ist die Weltwirtschaftskrise vom 29. Oktober 1929. Doch sind auch seit 2007 - von den USA ausgehend und durch Vergabe riesiger unbesicherter Kredite verursacht - extrem bedrohliche Krisensituationen der Weltwirtschaft entstanden.

Angesichts des Trümmerfelds, das deutsche Landesbanken, die staatseigene Bank KfW und die Hypo Real Estate im Sog der bankrotten US-Banken hinterlassen haben, d.h. in höchster Not und gedrängt durch kollabierende Banken und Finanzmärkte, bitten Angela Merkel und Peer Steinbrück die deutsche Bevölkerung um Vorschuß - an Vertrauen. Die Regierung verkündet großmäulig völlig unhaltbare Garantien für private Spareinlagen im Wert von 568 Milliarden Euro. Mit ihrem Versprechen wollen Kanzlerin und Finanzminister doch nur Menschen und Märkte beruhigen. Ein hoher Einsatz mit ungewissem Ausgang. Wenn ihre ihre Beruhigungspille nicht wirkt, ist alles aus. Danach gibt es nichts mehr. Merkel & Co. haben über das Sparer-Versprechen hinaus keine Steigerungsmöglichkeit mehr, kein Draufsatteln, sollte das deutsche oder europäische Finanzsystem doch kollabieren.

Der plötzliche Abgang von Lehman Brothers und Merrill Lynch hat der Wirtschaft riesige Mengen Liquidität entzogen, weil Papierwerte, die in Jahrzehnte langer Spekulation aufgeblasen wurden, wie ein Luftballon zerplatzten. Das ist Kapital, das gebraucht würde, um Geschäftstätigkeit zu finanzieren. Seine Vernichtung wird notwendigerweise das Wirtschaftshandeln behindern, Arbeitslosigkeit und Rezession anheizen. Das wird Immobilienpreise und Konsumausgaben weiter drücken und die Bilanzen schon finanziell geschwächter Banken weiter erschüttern.

In den USA und der Weltwirtschaft zeichnet sich eine Gezeitenwende ab, die zu einer Katastrophe von Ausmaßen führen kann, wie nicht mehr seit der Großen Depression der 1930er Jahre.

Der Fall solcher Ikonen des amerikanischen Kapitalismus wie der 158 Jahre alten Lehman Brothers oder der 94 Jahre alten Merrill Lynch kann die Ideologie der herrschenden Elite der USA vom "freien Markt" nur weiter diskreditieren und ihr politisches und ökonomisches System in Verruf bringen. Das Spektakel, Giganten des Kapitalismus in Schulden ertrinken zu sehen, die in Jahrzehnten verantwortungsloser Spekulation angehäuft wurden, muß zwangsläufig auch diejenige Oberschicht samt Regierungssystem diskreditieren, die für dieses Debakel verantwortlich ist.

Die Beruhigungspillen, die von den offiziellen Sprechern der Regierung, der Medien, der Wall Street und der Parteien im vergangenen Krisenjahr des Finanzsystems verabreicht wurden, haben alle Glaubwürdigkeit verloren. Die Beteuerungen, daß die jüngste Rettungsaktion der Regierung die Situation stabilisieren werde, daß das amerikanische Bankensystem im "Kern gesund" sei, daß die Kreditmärkte und der Wohnungsbau kurz "vor der Wende stehen", beruhigen niemanden mehr.
Die astronomischen Kosten der Rettungspakete werden von der Arbeitern in den USA und in Europa in Form grausamer Kürzungen der Sozialausgaben und einer starken Absenkung des Lebensstandards zu tragen sein, genauso wie die chinesischen Arbeiter gezwungen sein werden, für die Anarchie des globalen Kapitalismus durch einen gewaltigen Anstieg der Arbeitslosigkeit und Armut zu bezahlen.
Schluß mit der Duldungsstarre gegenüber den staatstragenden Dummschwätzern und Nebelwerfern!

Z.B. Citigroup: Dort werden, trotz des Gewinneinbruchs, in diesem Jahr 4 % mehr für Gehälter und Boni ausgezahlt als im Vorjahr - insgesamt 25,9 Milliarden Dollar. These include antioxidant, antiarthritic, antimutagenic, antitumor, anti-tumor promotion, antithrombotic, antivenom by neutralizing the hemorrhagic effect of the venom in mice, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, nematocidal, choleretic and antihepatotoxic activities. Low incidence of Alzheimers disease in regions where turmeric is extensively used in cuisine and as an herbal remedy suggests that it may protect against this disease since areas of high consumption such as those in India have very low Alzheimers incidence. Further, a transgenic mouse model of Alzheimers has shown favorable response to curcumin therapy. Little or no toxicity is reported for humans receiving large (8 g/day18) therapeutic doses of curcumin, an important major component of turmeric. Rather than exhibiting dose dependent toxicity, rodent experiments have shown that administration of the major metabolite of curcumin from early in life can extend median life span by 11%. The record of use of turmeric in Indian traditional ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years supports its possible therapeutic efficacy and its likely low toxicity. All these findings about turmeric biological activities make it a good candidate for development of pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, or food ingredients with functional properties.
