Es wurde beobachtet, daß Astaxanthin die Alterung des Gehirns verlangsamt, indem es den Gehalt an BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor) im Gehirn erhöht, oxidative Schäden an Lipiden, Proteinen und DNA abschwächt und die mitochondrialen Funktionen schützt. Neue Daten deuten nun darauf hin, daß ASX Nrf2, FOXO3, Sirt1 und Klotho-Proteine modulieren kann, die mit Langlebigkeit in Verbindung stehen. Zusammengenommen sprechen diese Mechanismen für eine Rolle von ASX als potenzieller Geroneuroprotektor.

What is R-alpha-lipoic acid and what are its functions in the human body?
Alpha-lipoic acid is a sulfur-containing fatty acid that naturally occurs in the human body and can also be found in small amounts in certain foods, such as beef and organ meats. It has both water-soluble and fat-soluble properties due to the two sulfur atoms that are connected in a ring structure. The body produces alpha-lipoic acid, and it is also readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and distributed throughout the body.
Alpha-lipoic acid has two main functions in the body. First, it is a coenzyme of enzyme complexes in the mitochondria of every cell, including the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex and alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase complex, which are essential for cellular energy production. Second, alpha-lipoic acid is a powerful and versatile antioxidant that can pass through the blood-brain barrier and protect the brain. It can penetrate both intra- and extracellular water-soluble and fat-soluble structures and can neutralize various types of free radicals, as well as chelate with heavy metals. Additionally, it can regenerate other oxidized antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, glutathione, and coenzyme Q10, and increase the intracellular content of these antioxidants and other antioxidant enzymes, such as catalase and glutathione reductase. Therefore, alpha-lipoic acid can substantially increase the body's antioxidant capacity, and supplementation with R(+)-alpha-lipoic acid, the natural and superior form, can provide these benefits without the potential negative effects of the synthetic form, S(-)-alpha-lipoic acid.

Kaffee reduziert das Risiko für Gicht (01.06.2007)
Ein hoher Kaffeekonsum senkt den Harnsäurespiegel im Blut und verringert dadurch das Risiko für Gicht. Dies ergaben 2 Studien eines kanadisch-amerikanischen Forscherteams, die 2007 veröffentlicht wurden.

Die Untersuchung der Daten ergab, daß der Harnsäurespiegel im Blut umso niedriger lag, je höher der Kaffeekonsum war. Kaffee senkt also die Harnsäurekonzentration. Dies geht aber nicht auf das Coffein im Kaffee zurück, denn weder der Teekonsum noch andere coffeinhaltige Getränke wie Cola beeinflussen diesen Wert. Interessanterweise senkt aber der Konsum von entcoffeiniertem Kaffee den Harnsäurespiegel, berichten die Forscher im Fachjournal »Arthritis Care and Research« (Doi: 10.1002/art.22762). Daraus folgern die Wissenschaftler, dass andere Bestandteile des Kaffees für diese Wirkung verantwortlich sind.
Daß sich der Kaffeekonsum auch auf das Risiko, an Gicht zu erkranken, auswirkt, zeigt eine andere Langzeitstudie. Bei der »Health Professionals Follow-up Study« nahmen 45 869 Männer aus Heilberufen teil, die seit 1986 medizinisch untersucht und auch zu ihren Lebensgewohnheiten befragt wurden. Unter anderem mussten sie ihren täglichen Kaffeekonsum angeben.
In den ersten 12 Jahren erkrankten 757 Teilnehmer an Gicht. Dabei hatten Männer, die täglich 4 bis 5 Tassen Kaffee tranken ein um 40 % niedrigeres Erkrankungsrisiko als Männer, die keinen Kaffee tranken. Wer sechs oder mehr Tassen täglich konsumierte, hatte ein um 59 % reduziertes Risiko, berichten Choi und seine Kollegen im Fachjournal »Arthritis and Rheumatism«
