Chemokines are signaling proteins that attract immune cells (leukocytes) to sites of inflammation. In MS, they become dysregulated, recruiting excessive amounts of immune cells into the central nervous system (CNS), which causes demyelination and damage to nerve fibers. While necessary for normal immune function, chemokines can "turn bad" and drive the autoimmune response that characterizes MS.
